Whole School Literacy

Literacy at Newport Free Grammar School is embedded throughout the curriculum to ensure that all students fulfil their potential.  We have a Marking Code which is used by all teachers to help students to improve their writing.  Students are encouraged to check their work carefully (the Literacy Mat which is available online can help with this) and every subject area identifies key spellings that students should know and learn.

We provide a range of extra-curricular activities which enrich students’ experiences of Literacy at Newport.  These include: Creative Writing Club, Debating Club and shadowing the Carnegie Award.  This year, we will be entering a team of Year 7 students in The Times Spelling Bee.
We also provide support for students who need it.  This includes: one-to-one tuition for students in Years 7-9; extra Literacy lessons for students in Year 7 and Year 8; Paired Reading and Spelling Club.
