Adult Language Classes at Newport Free Grammar School

Adult Language Classes at Newport Free Grammar School 2012-13

We have had to change the format of our classes this year, which started in the week beginning Monday, 17th September 2012, and have spaces in the following groups:

Spanish Tuesday 7.30pm in room E11: this is predominantly a group of beginners.  The aims of the course are to enable learners to communicate clearly and to encourage learners to demonstrate reasonable pronunciation and intonation, sufficient to enable communication. A description of the beginners’ course can be found on the website

Japanese Wednesday 7.30pm in room E9: this is a group of learners, where the majority are aiming to take their GCSE in Japanese this academic year.

French Wednesday 7.30pm in room E8: this group is made up mainly of learners who have a previous experience of learning the language. A description of an improvers’ course can be found on the website.

German Wednesday 7.30pm in room E7: this group of learners have previous experience of the language and, as well as practising the language on a conversational level, they are planning to study the culture of German speaking countries and perhaps some elementary literature.

All classes last 90 minutes and each course consists of 30 lessons.  Classes are charged at £190 for the course.  Please download the registration form from the website and post it with a cheque to the school address, marked FAO Mrs M Watson.  Please make cheques payable to Newport Free Grammar School and write your name and the language you would like to study on the back.

The dates of the classes are marked in red on the document Adult Language Class Dates 2012-13.

Which level is right for me?
Language Classes are offered at Beginners’ and Improvers’ levels.
Beginners’ classes are aimed at learners who have no previous experience of the language.  The classes will cover a wide variety of vocabulary and grammatical points by means of the language necessary for a holiday or short stay in a country where the language is spoken.  An emphasis will be placed on enabling learners to understand what they read or hear and to speak to make themselves understood to a sympathetic native speaker of the language.
Improvers’ classes are for learners who have some experience of the language, be it from an earlier adult class or at school.  These classes will cover a variety of vocabulary and grammatical points, reinforcing those covered in the beginners’ classes and extending the range.  The language used will be that required for a stay in the country, but there should also be opportunities to discuss other topics of interest, using articles, news items and advertisements that the learners read, watch or hear to initiate the conversation.  In addition to understanding what they read or hear and speaking to make themselves understood to a sympathetic native speaker, learners may also be encouraged to write in the language.
