Cambridgeshire U16 County Indoor Hockey Championship
Newport Free Grammar School’s U16 Girls followed up their success in the outdoor Championship by also winning the indoor championship in a very tight round robin tournament. The first match was against the Perse School and although Newport managed to exert quite a lot of pressure only a single goal from Claire Wyatt separated the teams. The second game against King’s Peterborough saw Newport go behind early in the game. A couple of good chances were created but then squandered before Emily Dan finished well to earn a draw. This meant that Newport went into their third match against Thomas Deacons needing to win to ensure that their destiny lay in their own hands. However, they again went behind and Olivia Doust was forced to make a couple of excellent saves to keep them in the game before Claire Wyatt scored to gain another draw. This meant that if Thomas Deacon beat Kings Peterborough that Newport would not be able to catch them. However, Kings played really well and beat Thomas Deacons which meant that Newport had to win their final game against Saffron Walden to go through. For a while it looked as if Newport were going to find it difficult to convert their pressure into goals but Brooke White gave Newport the vital lead and shortly before the end Claire Wyatt added another to make the result secure.
Newport Free Grammar School now go on to represent Cambridgeshire in the East of England finals in December.
