Welcome
to the website of Newport Free Grammar School, a
Specialist Language College for ages 11-18, with a second specialism in Science.
The school, after 400 years of existence, now serves
a wide area of Essex and extends into parts of Cambridgeshire,
Hertfordshire and Suffolk, and welcomes boys and
girls of all abilities.
Set in 34 acres of very attractive, undulating countryside,
the school currently has 1030 students, including
190 in a very strong Sixth Form.
Class sizes in Years 7-11 are a maximum of 28 and
in the Sixth Form the average class size is 9. Public
examination results at all levels exceed national
averages by some way.
Our philosophy is that we believe every boy and
girl has greater resources within themselves than
they imagine and therefore the staff have high expectations
of all students whatever their ability. We have
a highly-qualified and dedicated staff which is
practised in the art of tapping those resources
to the full.
Newport enjoys excellent facilities. Set in an area
of outstanding natural beauty, the school has recently
benefited from a number of important building projects;
a purpose-built Arts Centre, a floodlit all-weather
hockey pitch, a Science and Technology Centre, a
Sixth Form Centre and most recently a splendid new
Sports Hall.
These fine facilities complement the curriculum
we offer our students, a curriculum that is broad
and balanced, and relevant for the needs of young
people going into an ever-changing world.
Out-of-class activities also abound to educate young
people how to use their leisure time profitably,
to develop the personal qualities required for adult
life, but above all to enjoy!
In short, we aim to do the following:
- Academic achievement: to realise the
full potential of every student at all levels
of study through a broad and balanced curriculum.
- Extra-curricular activities: to give
individuals opportunities to develop personal
qualities such as self-confidence, high self-esteem,
ability to work in team situations and leadership
potential. Also to make school an even more
enjoyable place at which to be.
- International Programme: to educate
our students to be "world-wide model citizens"
by offering opportunities to go out into the
world or bring the world into school.
